There is no medical subject on which scientists require a separation of wheat from chaff more urgently than alcoholism. The tremendous volume of papers written and the unevenness of their quality provide a formidable obstacle to initiating new fundamental or clinical research, despite its urgent necessity and the wide possibilities for research in the subject of alcohol. The Herculean task of winnowing through this mountain of material was accomplished in 7 years by two authors, one Finnish and one American, who have a wide variety of complementary capabilities. They have succeeded in producing a comprehensive review of recent alcoholism research.
