An atlas illustrates; a textbook explicates. Since atlases have little written material worth mentioning, the quality and selection of the illustrations make or break the book. The color plates in this atlas are excellent. Well-chosen, beautifully photographed marrow and blood films portray normal development and a variety of abnormalities in the red cell, white cell, and platelet series. An attractive bonus is the separate wall chart with clear, well-reproduced figures of maturing cells.
When this volume attempts to go beyond the purely illustrative, it is less successful. Next to the blood and marrow films for many pathologic conditions are photomicrographs
