To the editor: I was very much interested in the article by Helman and colleagues in the March 1971 issue of the ANNALS, attesting to the value of prednisolone in treatment of hepatic coma. I had been hesitant to credit steroid therapy for the recovery of my last half dozen or more patients from severe hepatic coma. Their controlled study was therefore gratifying in confirming my impressions.
The editorial, "Alcoholic Hepatitis," by Reynolds and Edmondson in the same issue, however, quotes studies with conflicting results.
What may appear to be an inconsequential detail is that in the series in which
