The clinical care and management of patients with alcoholism and alcohol-related illness have always been difficult problems for practitioners of medicine, and a description of efficacious clinical techniques would be most welcome. Unfortunately, this volume provides no new theoretical or empirical insights. The text is a compilation of rather well-known conceptualizations about alcohol-related illness plus some research findings obtained by the authors. The research described not only has methodological limitations, but the uniqueness of the subject population described makes, as the authors acknowledge, broad generalizations difficult. There is decided lack of integration and coherence of the contents of the book,
