To the editor: We reviewed with interest the article by Drs. Jones and Blodgett, "Empyema in Rheumatoid Pleuropulmonary Disease," in the May 1971 ANNALS. We have a monthly Rheumatology Club, which includes all of the rheumatologists in Nassau and Suffolk counties. In polling the number of pleural effusions that we have seen and tapped, we have found no empyema in over 75 pleurocenteses of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. We wonder if faulty laboratory techniques might not explain the unprecendented percentage reported by Drs. Jones and Blodgett.
