This monograph is excellent in those sections reflecting the title, Control of Gastrointestinal Function. This includes particularly the physiology of secretion and motility. This is not a complete gastrointestinal physiological text, however; there are deficiencies in other aspects, particularly in the area of assimilation and in the pathophysiological aspects, throughout the book.
The best chapter is that related to gastric secretion, and it may reflect the author's major interest. There is a thorough discussion on a structural basis for gastric secretion, with good illustrations; cellular dynamics; experimental techniques; and complete description of the secretory products of electrolytes, enzymes, and acid.
