The reader of this collection of papers on venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism will become aware that there is as much controversy in Europe as in the United States about the pathogenesis and management of venous thromboembolism. A similar conclusion is reached on the relationship of oral contraceptives to thrombosis. It is disappointing that the discussions at the end of each section are not more conclusive.
