The chemical senses, taste and smell, were the subject of the last of five symposia devoted to discussions of sensory functions in vertebrates under the auspices of the Ciba Foundation. As so aptly pointed out by Chairman O. E. Lowenstein, the gustatory and olfactory senses have been the "Cinderellas of the senses," relatively neglected by sensory physiologists and neurologists. This in unfortunate because of the obvious relation of these senses to problems facing the world today: the need to fed underdeveloped nations, sometimes with unfamiliar diets, and the effects of pollution on our enjoyment of all aspects of life.
