Disorders of speech and language remain incompletely understood by all of us. The many apparently contradictory neurological definitions, the inability of neurologists to define that function that has been lost in aphasia, the inadequate explanation of symptom production, and the common emphasis on disability rather than retained function only perplex those charged with the care of the patient who has suffered language impairment. Professor Perkins's text, designed as a survey of the field of speech pathology, was written from the viewpoint of behavioral science, although influenced by physical, biological, psychological, and sociological disciplines.
