There can be little quarrel with the choice of the topic, cancer chemotherapy, as the subject of Volume 1 (of the new series Major Problems in Internal Medicine. The author has prepared a well-organized and concise text. The first two chapters review mechanisms of drug action and pharmacology. These are followed by chapters covering various organ systems, for example, genitourinary and gastrointestinal, and then by four chapters on the hematological malignancies. A chapter entitled "The Chemotherapeutic Treatment of Complications of Malignant Disease" covers pleural effusion and spinal cord compression.
The author's goal is "to summarize the available information in the
