To the editor: The subject of the usefulness of 5-fluorocytosine (5-FC) in treatment of fungal diseases has appeared in two issues of the ANNALS OF INTERNAL MEDICINE (1, 2). In the first article it was stated that "serious toxicity has not been observed," and in the second, that "other major toxic side effects, including possible pancytopenia, are not well documented." Because the authors may have been unaware of a case report published in Pediatrics in 1970 (3) that is pertinent to the subject of potential toxicity of 5-fluorocytosine, I wish to bring it to the attention of your readers.
