Wide application in clinical practice of the cytologic methods of early cancer detection pioneered by Dr. Papanicolaou has been associated with a 60% decrease in mortality rates for cancer of the uterine cervix in the United States. As the author of this text points out, the skills of the radiologist and endoscopist remain our chief reliance in cancer detection, although the diagnosis of 90% + curable intraepithelial carcinoma is achieved principally by experienced cytotechnologists. The target audience for this atlas has been broadened, from an earlier edition, to include medical students and practicing physicians, as well as the laboratory technologist.
