The National Heart and Lung Institute Task Force on Arteriosclerosis has advocated (1) creation of a national program to prevent and control arteriosclerosis and specifically recommended the establishment of national centers for prevention of arteriosclerosis, cardiovascular disease prevention clinics, lipid research clinics, and an Office of Health Education in the National Heart and Lung Institute. It has called for clinical trials to test risk factor hypotheses for coronary disease; it has called for specific programs aimed at increased understanding of the effects on the arteriosclerotic process and associated diseases of cigarette smoking, hypertension, exercise, and antithrombotic agents.
