To the editor: The other day I wanted to find the answer to a relatively simple but important question: How many new patients in the United States entered the chronic dialysis-transplant population in 1971? The registry of dialysis patients could tell me how many patients started dialysis in 1971 but not how many of those were former transplant patients; and, of course, the registry of transplant patients had no way of showing how many of the transplants were done on former dialysis patients.
