To the editor: Dr. Westphal has given us an excellent discussion in the June issue (p. 987) on the rational reasons why not to use whole blood. Year in and year out, since 1963, similar papers have appeared in our leading journals, which in essence present the criteria of transfusion practice. Why then another paper such as that of Dr. Westphal? Simply because as physicians we do not examine our practice by current criteria. Having not examined our practice, how then can we know that we do know and how then can we know that we must change. If in
