The diphtheria antitoxin content was determined in the following preparations obtained from four manufacturers: immune serum globulin, pertussis immune globulin, vaccinia immune globulin, and tetanus immune globulin. These were compared with diphtheria antitoxin of equine origin. None of the lots tested contained diphtheria antitoxin in sufficient concentration to allow use of the human globulins for antitoxic therapy of diphtheria. Since the incidence of diphtheria is increasing in the United States, a specific human diphtheria immune serum globulin for intravenous use should be developed. This would afford antitoxic therapy without hypersensitivity reactions, an unavoidable risk with the current equine diphtheria antitoxin.
