To the editor: In view of recent reports on increased rates of severe infections after splenectomy, particularly in patients with Hodgkin's disease (1-7), we have complied with interest with the request of the chairman of our infection control committee, Dr. Joseph G. Sinkovics, to review the records of patients who underwent splenectomy at our institution in the past 5 years.
The overall grouping is seen in Figure 1. The 37 patients with serious postsplenectomy infections were first grouped by underlying disease. There were 12 patients with Hodgkin's disease; 6 had nodular sclerosis, 2 mixed cell type, 3 lymphocyte-depletion type Hodgkin's
