To the editor: A letter by Abram ("Authors of Academia, Unite!" Ann Intern Med 77:153-154, 1972) suggested that publication of papers would be expedited by authors submitting simultaneously to several journals.
You criticize this practice as leading to an unnecessary increase in the work done by reviewers; this need not be so. For example, an author who finds he must submit a manuscript to n journals will have it seen by an average of 2n reviewers before it is accepted. Should he submit to m journals at once (where m is less than n), the probability of acceptance is approximately
