To the editor: Dr. Wilkins and her colleagues report (Ann Intern Med 77:930-932, 1972) a case of clinically apparent reinfection rubella in a naturally immune woman. Hankenes and Haram (1) reported a similar case in a gravid woman. Prior reports by Northrup (2) Strannegard (3), and Boué (4) stress the recurrence of clinical disease. Serologic evidence of reinfection after natural and vaccine-induced immunity has also been well documented (5, 6).
The significance of these findings on rubella-induced embryopathy is unclear. Rubella virus has been isolated from the products of conception of vaccinated women reinfected by wild-type virus during gestation (2),
