In a field where most books tend to be diatribes in favor of one position or another, Dr. Meyer has succeeded in presenting an overview that is well balanced and objective. The word "objective" is used here to indicate that the point of view of the reviewer coincides more or less exactly with that of the writer. That viewpoint holds the conviction that the problem of drug dependence involves complex biological, psychological, social, and legal mechanisms and that the solution to that problem must include coordinated programs in all of these areas.
