To the editor: The interesting association of ketoacidosis and alcoholism deserves further emphasis (Levy and colleagues; Ann Intern Med 78:213-219, 1973). During 3 years as a house officer at a county hospital (Harbor General Hospital, Torrance, California) I saw a total of 13 documented episodes in 6 different patients similar to those described by Dr. Levy. Since I saw only a small fraction of the patients at that hospital, I would think that this syndrome occurs frequently in alcoholic patients but is infrequently recognized.
Two associated problems, not mentioned in the report, should also be noted. Marked hypophosphatemia (less than
