An ambitious undertaking, to present the "total management of the arthritic patient" is generally achieved in this book. The title, however, is almost a paradox in terms because the specific details, which are the essential ingredients of total management, are encyclopedic in scope. The editor states that he deliberately avoids attempting to give detailed prescriptions for the arthritic conditions. He has chosen instead to offer a potpourri, in various degrees of depth and scope, by seven authors, including himself. The book is therefore uneven, reflecting the extreme differences in styles and breadth of knowledge of the various contributors.
