A comprehensive down-to-date review and critique of 1800 papers, many from German, French, and Italian sources. It deals with all the known infectious pneumonias, except tuberculous, and those of allergic, chemical, or mechanical origin. Changes in microbial causes, and nosocomial and iatrogenic infections resulting from 30 years of antimicrobial usage are portrayed. The importance of etiologic diagnosis before therapy is emphasized. Atypical pneumonia is placed in proper perspective. Epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, complications, pathology, and laboratory and roentgenologic aspects are well covered. Therapy deals only with antimicrobics.
