The editors of the 1955 first edition of this color atlas of hematology, Heilmeyer and Begemann, praised in their preface the superiority of the painted illustration over the colored photomicrograph. The new edition has added a number of photographic reproductions to supplement the original paintings. These confirm the opinions of the original editors more eloquently than words. The paintings of Hans Dettelbacher are masterpieces in the accurate rendering of color and detail. They stake a firm claim that the medical artist, with his freedom to select and rearrange what he sees, will never be rendered obsolete by the camera. The
