To the editor: On 25 May 1973 a study group met at the Center for Disease Control to define standards of adequacy of cytologic examination of the female genital tract. They issued the following text.
Introduction: The value of the cytologic examination in detection of epithelial abnormality of the female genital tract depends very critically on the quality of the specimen received in the laboratory. A poorly obtained or poorly fixed cellular sample may be interpreted incorrectly by the cytopathologist.
Uterine Cervix: An adequate cervical cytologic sample (Pap smear)
