DR. KAO, a world figure in the field of respiratory physiology, has performed a notable service by writing this clear introduction to the basic physiology underlying oxygen and carbon dioxide transport to and from the mitochondrion. Many of the topics involved have been very difficult for undergraduate medical students to grasp; Dr. Kao has made his book easy to read by using a conversational style without sacrificing brevity and by using graphical presentations to good effect. Questions at the end of each chapter allow students to test themselves. An early chapter on physical principles is a model of its kind.
