To the editor: At Stony Brook Medical School, the teaching of medical interviewing and physical diagnosis is begun during the first week of training and is taught weekly, for one full day each week, for 6 months. This gives the students approximately 250 hours of instruction in these disciplines during the first half of the first year and it prepares them for systems teaching.
At the end of the 6-month training period, the students are given a monitored examination, in which they individually do an interview and physical examination of a patient unknown to them. For this exercise they are
