A survey of the history of microbiology that encompasses mycology and protozoology as well as the central fields of bacteriology, immunology, and genetics. Pre-Pasteurian microbiology is covered in the first chapter, and most of the remaining chapters are given to the post-Koch period up through Lederberg's work. A distinguishing virtue of this history is its frequent lengthy quotations from classical and germinal papers. Can be effectively used by students for reading in parallel with standard textbooks of microbiology to add to their historical perspective.
Reprinted, with some minor additions, from the first edition published in 1965.
