Consumer awareness, a threat or a treat? I believe it's a treat and that it is advanced by this book from the Consumers Union. It confronts issues that patients must deal with daily without physician contact. The consumer is offered "a restorative of balance and perspective, an antidote to excesses, and a purgative for much nonsense." Although much of the book challenges the products of the pharmaceutical industry, it does confront appropriately some issues within the medical profession.
