In-house manuals of therapeutics are of interest not only as aids for practicing physicians but also as standards of current practice against which physicians might measure their own institutions. Of particular value for both purposes is the manual from such a prestigious institution as Washington University in St. Louis. Quite properly the 21st edition of this popular manual is dedicated to the late Carl V. Moore (1908-1972), a compassionate physician who deserves much credit for making Washington University a world-renowned center of hematology and its "Washington Manual" one of the most popular of such manuals.
