Three centuries ago, the term "an apothecaries charge" was commonly used in England as a synonym for an unreasonably high price for any commodity or service. Even today, because patients do not wish to have to buy drugs, and because the prescribers make the decision for them, there is a great deal of resentment over drug prices. Drugs are probably the only tangible commodity that the patient receives from the medical care system. Therefore, to many persons drug prices symbolize the high cost of health care in this nation.
