On 30 October 1972, President Nixon signed into law PL 92-603, which sharply raised the level of involvement of the federal government in health care. This law is best known to physicians because of its section that mandates the formation of Professional Standards Review Organizations (PSROs). This legislation was intended to translate into action the "concern" of the Congress over the quality and cost effectiveness of medical care.
