Rarely does publication of a collection of papers from a symposium make a good book. However, this collection of 15 articles from a recent symposium on opportunistic infections is so well edited that it is not only informative but interesting and readable.
The initial article provides a sound overview of opportunistic infections and sets the stage for the following articles, which are primarily devoted to putting laboratory aspects of opportunistic infections in perspective. After a review of biochemical methods for identification of Gram-negative bacilli and a description of the serologic diagnosis of Gram-negative bacillary infections, there is an excellent article
