From scientists and educators one expects objectivity, frankness, and veracity not only in their research and teaching but also in their other endeavors. One happily finds such qualities in this remarkable book in which 24 eminent European medical educators, each from a different country, lucidly describe without braggadocio and analyse without apparent bias the role of the medical schools of their respective countries in research and teaching. This fact, combined with the importance and timeliness of the subject matter, makes this symposium a meritorious contribution worthy of the attention of the medical profession and health agencies.
