The study of abnormal hemoglobin disorders in both the clinical and the research setting has received a big boost from the multiple screening programs for sickle cell carriers. Unfortunately, some of the laboratory data produced have not been of the highest quality nor have their clinical applications been much better. The Hemoglobin Section of the Center for Disease Control has striven mightily and not without effect to improve this situation.
