Virtually single-handed, Dr. John Gordon Freymann has written an ambitious panorama—a "War and Peace" of the American health care system. He begins by reaching back to the Middle Ages for the historical origins of our system and ends with some educated guesses as to what health care will be like by the turn of the 21st century. The fulcrum of the tome is the year 1965 when the Johnson Administration pressed enactment of Titles XVIII and XIX of the Social Security Act and 24 other health bills through Congress.
