To the editor: I found the article "South Africa: Research Worker's Paradise" (Ann Intern Med 82:588, 1975) unusually offensive. I did not like its overall tone and its rather ghoulish suggestion that investigators should hurry before it is too late to seize the opportunities for research provided there by the manifest suffering of the majority of its black population. Nor did I like the way in which Dr. Gilder carefully avoided all reference to the root political causes of the patterns of ill health he so enthusiastically proposes to exploit. His explanations range from the naive to the obscure, and
