To the editor: The staff of the Mycobacteria Reference Laboratory feels that the results published by Drs. Boyd and Marr (Ann Intern Med 82:489-492, 1975) cannot be generalized and should not instill the suspicion that all laboratories turn out false-positive (55%) and false-negative (78%) microscopy results at a rate described in their paper. Our laboratory uses essentially the same methods as they described but processes almost 30 000 clinical specimens a year.
In order to do a valid comparison, we evaluated our results of 1 July through 31 December 1974 according to Boyd and Marr, and tabulated them exactly the
