This monograph is primarily a compendium of previously published papers covering 7 different areas: morbidity, cardiovascular-cerebral disease, sickle cell anemia, cancer, alcoholism and drug abuse, mental illness, and health care delivery. The authors have an obviously interesting and important topic. There are, however, three problems. First, the unifying thesis seems to be that the health gap is wide between blacks and whites and is growing wider. Yet, analyses of life tables suggest that judged by this single, perhaps simplistic, index, that thesis may be of uncertain validity.
