The ultimate success of a book, from the practical view-point, depends on the audience it reaches and how well it serves that body. The current edition of Dr. Kagan's book has the potential to be of great value to everyone interested in the management and treatment of infectious diseases—medical students, house officers, trainees, practitioners, and subspecialists. Although relatively compact, it is complete enough to serve as a source book for minutia. The table of contents shows, however, that this text is not primarily a compendium of facts about individual antimicrobial agents, but is a course in understanding and clinical application
