Preliminary national estimates of blood pressure levels of adults 18-74
years in the civilian, noninstitutionalized population. The data were collected during 1971-72 in the first
Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. These preliminary findings are based on the examination of 6525
persons 18-74 years of age who were part of a representative subset of 35 and of the 65 Primary Sampling Units
that made up the total sample.
Mean systolic blood pressures increased substantially with age from 121.3 mm Hg at 18-44 years to 148.4 mm
Hg at 60-74 years, an increment of 27%. Similarly, mean diastolic pressures increased substantially
