Population and nutrition are subjects that should logically be considered together, as they are in this book. Manocha begins by effectively pointing out the implications of the world's soaring population on human nutrition. India doubled her food output between 1950 and 1970 yet, due to a population that is increasing at a rate of 13 million per year, only increased the per capita availability of food grains by 18 percent. It is estimated that 60 percent of the earth's population, largely in those countries euphemistically called developing, is chronically undernourished, and these areas tragically have the highest population growth rates.
