"Traumatology," like oncology, critical care, and neonatology, represents yet another emerging "horizontal" specialty, one that cuts across traditional systems-oriented practice boundaries. As such, it is an amalgam of expertise in such diverse fields as respiratory medicine, plastic surgery, hematology, and thoracic-cardiovascular surgery. Although much has been written about trauma and its management, hitherto there has not been a good pathophysiologically based text. To produce a major book on this topic was an ambitious enterprise that required coordination and strongly directive editing for the necessary multi-authorship.
