The association of hypothyroidism and ventilatory abnormalities (1) is well known, as is the relation of hypoxia to erythrocytosis (2). No patients with hypothyroidism and absolute erythrocytosis, however, have been described, but we have recently seen a patient who presented with both. Erythrocytosis resolved after treatment with thyroid hormone alone. Pulmonary function studies were normal, and other secondary causes of polycythemia were excluded.
A 24-year-old white man was admitted to Carswell USAF Regional Hospital because of fatigue, cold intolerance, and hoarseness of 1 month's duration. His past medical history revealed that he had had a subtotal thyroidectomy for hyperthyroidism 8
