To the editor: Baum and associates (1) described in 1973 a possible association between oral contraceptives and benign hepatoma (adenoma). However, the lesion described better fits, from a pathologic point of view, the entity "focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver" due to the presence of bile ducts in the latter condition, inter alia (2). The term "adenoma" is, however, still used by some authors (3).
Focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver contains large thin-walled vessels. Therefore, a contraindication has been stated in this journal and elsewhere (3, 4) for the performance of needle biopsy when this condition is suspected. It
