To the editor: I wish to bring to the attention of Craig, Dordal, and Myles, ("The Use of Ampicillin in Acute Pancreatitis," Ann Intern Med 83:831-832, 1975), that, contrary to their statement "that no published controlled studies . . . evaluating prophylactic antibiotics in acute pancreatitis have been heretofore published," a previous randomized prospective study evaluating the use of prophylactic antibiotics in the treatment of acute pancreatitis was reported 10 months earlier by Howes, Zuidema, and Cameron ("Evaluation of Prophylactic Antibiotics in Acute Pancreatitis," J Surg Res 18:197-200, 1975).
