The systematic immunization of the population of Mali against smallpox from 1926 through 1971 was a substantial feat. The foreword by John C. Willey points out the importance of Dr. Imperato's role to the success of this mission. This is underlined by his receipt of two medals, one from the United States Department of State and the other from the Agency for International Development, for this work.
