Doctor Murphy is head of the Division of Medical Genetics of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Both he and Dr. Chase have strong mathematical and statistical interests. As a result their book does provide "principles" and gives a mathematical background to what we as genetic counselors do. It is not a substitute for a human genetics or medical genetics text; nor is it a place to seek recurrence risks, although many are available here. Compared to other works dealing with mathematical and statistical aspects of genetics, their book is quite readable, with the focus of attention being on
