The format for this edition of Dr. Goldberger's book is similar to that used for the previous edition, which was published in 1970. Major topics in water, electrolyte and acid-base metabolism are subdivided into clinical syndromes, which are then presented in terms of etiology, pathophysiology, symptoms, signs, laboratory findings, and so on. The scope is broad, and separate chapters are given to important specific disorders (for example, diabetic acidosis, after general discussion of metabolic acidosis syndromes). New chapters on inappropriate ADH syndromes, lactic acidosis, intravenous hyperalimentation, and peritoneal dialysis are included. The text is not specifically annotated, but a bibliography,
