Individual departments of hospitals operate with such autonomy and so little interchange of personnel that the professional and paraprofessional staffs who care for patients often have little knowledge about what happens to those patients when they go off for tests and procedures. This book, an outgrowth of an in-house manual prepared for the surgical nursing staff at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, might less pretentiously have been subtitled, "What Happens to the Patient When He Leaves the Floor."
